FEATHERSTON

MINIATURE RIFLES OPENING OF THE SEASON. (“Times-Age” Special.) There was a fair attendance at the opening of the season by the Featherston Miniature Rifle Club, held last night. The following are the scores of members who recorded 90 points and over. These scores are considered to be highly satisfactory for the first shoot of the season. L. G. Rasmussen is to be congratulated, scoring a possible:—L. G. Rasmussen, 100; K. McKenzie, 97; W. Nix, 98; Mrs Guy Rhodes, 95; Guy Rhodes, 95; J. H. Buck, 96; Mrs A. E. Wilson, C. Rasmussen, 91; R. Rasmussen, 91; C. Foster, 91; N. Castle, 92; C. Buck, 91. The opening of the season by the Featherston Miniature Rifle Club was somewhat marred by the absence of Mr W. Johnson, late president, and a member of the club since its inception, through illness. Naturally Mr Johnson took a very active interest in the affairs of the club, and if can safely be said that he was the “father” of it. His cheery smile and sound advice will be greatly missed by the members. Mr Johnsen Is a vice-president of the Wellington Miniature Rifle Association and president of the Wairarapa Association, so his retirement will be greatly felt. It is the sincere wish of all members that his. health will soon improve and that he will once more be with them. FIRE BRIGADE ENJOYABLE EUCHRE PARTY. There was an excellent attendance at the weekly euchre party held in the Officers’ Room, at the Anzac Hall, in aid of the local Fire Brigade. The prize-winners were as follow: —Ladies, Mrs J. Saba 1. Mrs W. Mellish 2; men, Mrs W. Cuff 1, Mr J. Anderson 2. The consolation prizes fell to Miss Belle Anderson and Mrs E. Elder.

The ladies’ aggregate was won by Mrs M. Rasmussen, with Mrs S. Kinsey second, while Mr W. McGuiness carried off the men’s prize with Mr Norman Burt second. Ladies’ Golf. A Stableford competition was played for on the Gumgrove links yesterday when Mrs T. Gold and Mrs W. J. Pope tied for first place with Mrs W. Connell second and Mrs J. B. Davis third. Personal Items. Mr and Mrs R. N. Barton, “Ongaha,” have returned from Gisborne where they attended the wedding of their son Alan to Miss Jill Williams. Miss Betty Rowles is spending a holiday in Dannevirke. Miss Judy Sharp left yesterday to take up a position with the Women’s Air Auxiliary Force in 'Wellington. Miss Betty Holmes will also shortly join, the force. Mrs J. Willett and family are on a brief visit to Waikanae. Mr and Mrs A. W. Erickson, of Patea, have been renewing old acquaintances in and around the district. It will be remembered that Mr Erickson was employed as herd tester at the Featherston Dairy Factory several years ago. Miss Pat O’Neale, of the Ohau School, is spending the holidays with her parents, Mr and Mrs E. E. O’Neale, Underhill Road. Euchre Party and Dance. A well attended euchre party and dance was held in the Kahutara Hall on Tuesday evening, the proceeds from which will be donated to the fund for the purchase of wool and parcel fund. Mrs C. Bargh won the ladies’ prize and Mr F. W. Wood the men’s. Supper was served and was followed by a dance. National Savings Flag. With a pang of regret it was noticed yesterday that the National Savings ' Bank flag which had been flying from the mast head at the local Post Office was missing. Upon inquiry it was learned that the flag had just been lowered to save it being torn in the wind. Featherston has lately headed the list in the National Savings competition in the Wellington Postal District, which competition is worked out on a population and percentage basis. A certain amount of credit is due to the efficiency of the local Post Office Staff in endeavouring and inducing the public to open accounts. It is the earnest desire of the staff to keep the flag flying, so residents who have not opened an account, should do so now. Letters from Soldiers. Welcome letters have been received from quite a number of soldiers overseas. Relatives were becoming rather worried at the non-receipt of letters, but it is believed difficulty in purchasing note paper and stamps was experienced in Greece. Probably the money question had some bearing on this, as one soldier, in writing to his parents, remarked that the only purchases available were oranges which were 5d each and eggs. As neither appealed to the lads, the money was not changed. The climatic conditions were somewhat of a contrast and after the bareness of the desert it was indeed pleasing as well as refreshing to see an abundance of uncultivated flowers growing profusely in the unfenced fields, such as beautiful anemones. A rather interesting feature of the letters was that they had affixed to them New Zealand stamps.
