The further counting of election votes has improved the positions of Messrs Mair and Fitzsimons. The former is now over 600 votes ahead of his Labour opponent and is expected to maintain his lead. Mr Fitzsimons probably will receive enough of the out-' standing votes to retain his seat. The 84 seats for which results are now clear are distributed as follow:- — Labour 53 United Australia Party and United Country Party .... 24 Independents 7 Four Of the Independents arc United Australia Party supporters.
