Territorials Return.

Local members of the First Hawke's Bay Regiment returned to Masterton by the south-bound mail train yesterday afternoon from Palmerston North, following the completion of the field manoeuvres held recently in the Wairarapa and Manawatu districts.

Shop Day. / z The annual.shop day held by the Ladies' Social Guild of the Lansdowne Presbyterian Church in Masterton yesterday proved most successful. Brisk business was reported and the well-stocked stalls were soon cleared. Competitions resulted:—-Best knitted article: Mrs Davis-Goff; best apron. Mrs D. McNeur; best sponge. Mrs McKenzie; scones, Miss T. McKenzie.

Echo of Motor Fatality. Having been found guilty on Tuesday on a charge of negligent driving causing the death of Myra Minnie Codes.at Hillcrest on March 13, William Reid Douglas, aged 27, motion picture projectionist, Morrinsville, appeared for sentence before Mr Justice Johnston in the Supreme Court in Hamilton yesterday. Douglas was fined £25 and also ordered to pay the costs of the prosecution, the total to be paid in monthly instalments of £5. His driving licence was cancelled for two years, and he was ordered to lake out a prohibition order for 12 months.

State Housing Programme. “While the Dominion must face a serious drop in building because ol lack of labour and the shortage of materials, steps are being taken by the Director of Housing Construction to ensure an increase in the State housing programme,” stated Mr James Fletcher, chairman, in moving the adoption of accounts at the first annual meeting of Fletcher Holdings, Ltd., at Auckland yesterday. “This is possibly due to the utilisation of New Zealand manufactured materials, and today, with the exception of a very small percentage, all houses being built by the department are made from such materials.’’

Victory Queen Carnival. The Public Services Queen. Miss Joan Young, was the successful candidate in the Wellington Victory Queen Carnival, which concluded last night. The final positions of the candidates were:— Public Services (Miss Joan Young),- 2,181.145 votes. Commerce (Miss Patricia Luckie). 2,129,821 votes. Fighting Services (Sister Molly Mahoney). 1,218,891 votes. Hutt Valley (Mrs H. T. Love). 1.012.046 votes. Movies (Mrs Ben Fuller). 9-11,831 votes. Transport (Miss Paddy Hope Gibbons). 888.995 votes. The total number of votes cast was 8,372.730. representing £104.659.
