FEATHERSTON

HOME GUARD A BUSY DAY. ("Times-Age” Special.) Members of the local Home Guard, in charge of Mr A. White, Second in Command, had an all-day outing on Sunday lasi. They paraded at the Town Hall at 10 a.m. for a short church service which was conducted by Mr B. J. Lobb and then marched to the old military camp site at Tauherenikau. Training in field craft, field signals, loading and firing and taking cover was.engaged. Two platoons very successfully received messages from headquarters and delivered the same safely to the N.C.O’s. in charge. Opportunity was taken by the N.C.O’s. to gain practice in giving orders. Owing to rain setting in, it was decided to start on the homeward trek somewhat earlier than was anticipated. MINIATURE RIFLE CLUB ANNUAL MEETING. At the annual meeting of the Featherston Miniature Rifle Club, in the absence of the president, Mr W. Johnson, who was unable to be present owing to indifferent health, Mr C. J. Nix was voted to the chair. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: —Patron, Mr A. Viles (re-elected); president, Mr C. J. Nix; vice-presidents, Mrs E. M. Wakely, Miss Card, Messrs W. Johnson, R. W. Matthews, N. Matthews, W. Charles, T. G. Hardie, J. W. Card, R. Williams and F. Brough; clqb captain, Mr lan Feast; vice-captain, Mr W. J. Shepherd (re-elected). Several new members were proposed. A heartj r vote of thanks was passed to Mr W. Johnson, for his untiring services. Regret was expressed at his having to retire from the club for health reasons. The meeting passed a vote of condolence with Mr and Mrs G. Molineux Browne and family in the loss of their son. Gunner Tom Brown, who carried out the duties of secretary to the club prior to his joining the Air Force. Personal Items. Mr and Mrs F. S. Hayes are spending the school vacation in the West Coast district. Miss Vera Jury, who .has been visiting her parents, Mr and Mrs A. Jury, Fitzherbcrt Street, has returned to Wellington. Miss Mary Carmine, of Paeroa, paid a brief visit to Featherston, and was the guest of Mrs W. H. Rowles. Miss Carmine spent her younger days in Featherston during her father’s term as stationmaster. Miss F. Luscombe, of Kaponga, who has been visiting Mrs W. H. Davis, has returned home accompanied by Miss Mary Davis. Mrs W. J. Crawford, of Hastings, has returned home. Mrs K. Player and Mrs Mervyn Player, of Wellington, spent the weekend .in Featherston as the guests of Mrs L. G. Benton. Mrs D. McClellan, of. Thames, 'ln spending the school vacation with Mrs R. Charles; Hayward Street.

On Friday last, the staff of the Featherston District High School assembled to bid farewell to Miss Wharton, infant mistress, who has been appointed to a similar position at the District High School. Levin. In presenting Miss Wharton with a crystal vase from the staff, Mr F. S. Hayes wished her every success and happiness in her new work. The junior pupils of the school also showed their appreciation by presenting her with an electric torch. Miss Wharton feelingly returned thanks. Among those present at the gathering was Miss Wharton's father, from Nelson. A very familiar voice ’was heard over the radio on Sunday hist, when Sergeant Billy Marshall, who is serving with the forces in Egypt, sent greetings to his wife and family. During civilian days Mr Marshall was employed by a life insurance company and is well known throughout the district. Euchre Party. Mesdames V. Bergh, H. Ciindy and Arch. Clark were hostesses at the Red Cross Society's euchre parly held yesterday afternoon. There was a record attendance. The euchre prize was won by Miss Card, who kindly handed the same back to the committee. The following competitions were drawn during the afternoon: —Pillow slips, donated by Mrs G. S. Sharp, won by Mrs J. 13. McKenna. Duster bag. donated and worked by Mrs J. Willett, won by Mrs V. Bergh. Duck, donated by Mrs 11. Cundv, won by Miss Card.
