CARTERTON

ORDER OF ODD FELLOWS LOYAL HEART OF OAK LODGE. ("Times-Age” Special.) The fortnightly meeting of Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge last evening was presided over by Sister F. Eagle, N.G. One member, who is an inmate of Wellington Hospital, declared on the funds. A vote of sympathy with the parents and family of the late Bro. Douglas John McPherson, who was killed in air operations over Scotland recently, • was passed. Members stood in silence / for a few moments as a mark of respect. Sister McFarlane, P.D.G.M., Wellington, wrote notifying that she had been appointed editor in connection with the early history of lodges for a publication which was to be issued by the Society, and asking for information regarding the Heart of Oak Lodge. The secretary stated that the request was being attended to. Mrs Loasby wrote thanking lodge members for the sympathy extended to her relative to her son Lawrence, who is reported missing in air operations. A report of the Wellington District Management Committee’s meeting was placed before the lodge. P.G. Bro. G. S. Bruce, as a member of the Management Committee, explained various matters in connection with the meeting, and was accorded a vote of thanks. Accounts amounting to £9 13s 2d were passed for payment, including £8 16s 8d sick pay.

Personal Items. Mr and Mrs Geo. Knowles, of Cashmere Hills, Christchurch, are visitors to Dalefield. The death occurred on Saturday at a private hospital in Auckland, of Mr Louis Jackson, husband of Mrs Frances Laura Jackson, and father of Mrs Keith Suisted, Waihakeke Road, Carterton, and Mrs Jack Wingate, Carrismore, Ashhurst, and formerly of Waihakeke Road, Carterton, at the age of 59 years. The funeral took place at Auckland yesterday. Power Board Election. On Saturday next an election will be held for a seat on the Wairarapa Electric Power Board to represent the Wairarapa South County Council. In another column Mr Geo. W. Hart adverCy- tises that, having been approached by numerous ratepayers, he has consented to nomination, and will therefore go to the poll on Saturday. Mr Hart’s lifetime interests have been in the Wairarapa South, and he has from time to time taken an active part in the welfare of the district and in connection with various important local bodies. He solicits the support of the ratepayers, and, if elected, will do his best bn their behalf. Entertainment of Soldiers. The Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, presided over a meeting of the Carterton Farewell Committee in the Council Chambers last evening, when it was decided to hold an official social gathering for soldiers in the King’s Theatre, Carterton, on Thursday evening. Fireman Entertained. There was a full attendance of members of the Carterton Volunteer Fire Brigade at the first station last night when a social gathering was tendered to Fireman J. M. Harp who is on leave from the military camp. Ex-Superintendent E. McKenzie referred to the excellent service which had been rendered to the Fire Brigade by the guest of the evening over a period of nine years. He had been a very capable and conscientious brigades man. The members of the brigade wished Fireman Harp the best of luck and a safe return to Carterton. The speaker said that he had pleasure in asking Fireman Harp to accept a pocket wallet. The presentation was followed by the singing of "For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” Deputy Superintendent Churchouse spoke in a similar strain. Fireman Harp suitably replied. Patriotic Dance. The Carterton Swimming Club held a very successful dance in the Masonic Hall, Carterton, last evening, there being a large attendance. A most enjoyable time was spent to music provided by Tom Udy’s Orchestra. Much appreciated extras were played by Miss V. Irwin and Mr A. Morris. Mr Geo. Brown, Junr., made an efficient M.C. Dance and Euchre Party. In the Parkvale Hail on Saturday next an euchre party and dance will be held in aid of patriotic funds. Music will be supplied by Mrs Ashton’s Orchestra and excellent prizes will be of\J fered in connection with the euchre ’. tourney.
