FATE OF GOVERNMENT IN QUESTION. IN BOOTHBY BY-ELECTION. CANBERRA, May 12. Should Labour win the Boothby byelection in South Australia'on Saturday week, as it expects to do, the Menzies Government will face an embarrassing situation. Success at Boothbywould bring the Labour strength to 37 of the 74 voting members in the House of Representatives. Opposed would be 35 Government supporters with two Victorian Independents, Messrs Coles and Wilson, holding the balance of power. The Labour leader, MT Curtin, stated today that, if the Government loses Boothby he expects it to resign to make way for a Labour administration.
