HORTICULTURAL COURSE
VISIT OF MISS COCKS-JOHNSTON. WOMEN’S DIVISION & INSTITUTE COMMITTEE. At a meeting of the local co-ordina-ting committee of the Women’s Division and the Women’s Institutes, held at the Countrywomen’s Club there were present Mrs T. R. Barrel’ (in the chair), Mesdames Groves, C. C. Jackson and Munn. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames N. McKay and Keir. Miss Cocks-Johnston, travelling tutor in horticulture, was present to meet the committee.
Miss Cocks-Johnston explained that her course included general cultivation of garden plants, treatment of soils, control of -pests, pruning, vegetable growing, and preservation of fruit and vegetables. A whole course consisted of three whole or six half days. If preferred a field day could be held for which two subjects could be chosen. Whichever were chosen, however, the management of manures, of soils, control of pests and" diseases would be in addition included in the course.
Miss Cocks-Johnston proposes to visit the Wairarapa during August. AU women (or men) interested in the proposed subjects are invited to enrol for the classes, and it is hoped that other women’s organisations will co-operate with the Women’s Institute and Women's Division.
