GAS WARFARE

ADDRESS TO E.P.S. UNITS. An address on gas warfare was given in Masterton last night by Miss V. Van Staveren (Wellington), to members of the E.P.S. organisation and others. Miss Van Staveren dealt with the effects of mustard and Lewisite gases. Mustard gas. she said, had a delayed action, and it was often from twentyfour to forty-eight hours before it affected the body. In England a Harley Street specialist was using mustard and Lewisite gases on himself to train others so that they could cope with it. He used one millimetre, equal to a pinshead, placed on a thick pad, which he allowed to soak through his skin. Miss Van Staveren showed charts and pictures of the effects of these gases. At the conclusion of her address she was accorded a vote of thanks.
