PRECAUTIONS TAKEN
AUCKLAND HOSPITAL CLOSED. OUTBREAK OF MENINGITIS IN NORTHLAND. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, May 9. “While the action taken must not be taken as a ’scare,’ I have ordered that as from tonight the hospital shall be closed to visitors, till further notice,” said Mr Allan Moody, chairman of the Auckland Hospital Board, today in referring to the outbreak of cerebro-spinal meningitis in Northland. . , .... , ~ “I understand,” he said, that the outbreak is not of a serious nature, but in the interests of all the hospital patients a definite stand must be taken. All my advisers agree with the course taken. I hope the outbreak will be stamped out speedily. ’ Mr Moody said that as usual the hospital was full to capacity. It is reported from Whangarei that the number of cases of cerebro-spinal meningitis since the outbreak of the disease in Northland has now reached 16, 12 Maoris and four Europeans. Of these, three Europeans and one Maori have died, while two patients have been discharged from hospital as cured and free from infection. All these patients have been treated in the Kawakawa Hospital.
