MAURICEVILLE
WOMEN’S INSTITUTE PATRIOTIC ACTIVITIES. ("Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Mauriceville Women’s Institute was held at Mrs 'J. A. Baine’s residence. There was a good attendance,' presided over by the president. Miss R. Mortensen, who welcomed Mrs Broadbent as a new member. A particularly attractive vase presented by an anonymous donor was exhibited, and will be presented to the member who brings to the September meeting the most appropriate soldier’s parcel. The secretary, Mrs G. Wilson, reported fully on the conference held recently in Masterton. Opportunity was taken to distribute | 48 skeins of khaki wool to the members for making up serviceable garments for men on active service. The president paid a tribute to the gallant fight by the Anzacs in Greece. “I am going to appeal to you all and I know that the response will be good and worthy of real inspiration to the rest of the community, to come forward and do whatever you can to assist patriotic activities,” said the president. Competitions resulted as follow:— Best bloom, Miss R. Mortensen and Miss J. Larsen, equal, 1; Mrs I. D. Cameron 3. Article made from 251 b flour bag: Mrs J. A. Baine 1, Mrs G. Osborne 2, Miss J. Larsen 3. The sing, say or pay roll call caused much amusement and the institute funds were augmented considerably. The bring and buy stall did brisk business, again proving a popular attraction. Next month’s meeting will be held at Mauriceville West and members are to bring their shillings for the next consignment of soldiers’ parcels; also any flour bags that can be spared. The monthly competitions will be for a batch of biscuits suitable for soldiers’ parcels and also for the best bloom. The hostesses for the next meeting will be Mesdames G. Neilson and J. Osborne. The roll call will be "A good tooth agent." The afternoon was brought to a close with refreshments and the singing of the National Anthem. Personal. Mrs Robt. Clarke is at present visiting Wellington. Misses Pat and Judith Childs are on vacation and are staying with their mother at the Mauriceville schoolhouse.
