EKETAHUNA
DEMOCRATIC LABOUR ADDRESS BY MR BARNARD. ("Times-Age” Special.) There was only a fair attendance at the address given by the Hon. W. E. Barnard in the Public Hall on Thursday night. The Mayor. Mr W. Olsen, presided, and also on the stage were Messrs E. Esler and D. 11. Butcher, presidents of the Masterton and Eketahuna branches of the Democratic Labour Party respectively. Mr Barnard was accorded an attentive hearing. He dealt mainly with present day problems and criticised what he termed the Labour Government’s too-slow war effort policy. He also discussed many points of the Democratic Labour Party’s policy. At the conclusion of his address Mr Barnard answered several questions and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks, which was carried by acclamation. HIGH SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Eketahuna District High School Committee was held on Wednesday evening, there being present: Messrs H. E. Greathead (in the chair), S. Daniel, R. Farrow, R. Gallagher, J. Tolley, and K. Murray. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs H. E. Rogers and A. B. Fordyce (headmaster). Accounts amounting to £l5 2s 6d were passed. The headmaster, in his monthly report, stated inter alia, that the number on the primary roll was 157, an increase of 1; the High School figure was 49, an increase of 1. Attendances during the month had been poor owing to the prevalence of colds, mumps and whooping cough. Miss Clarkson, who was absent for a fortnight owing to illness had now resumed duties. Mr L. Anker left the staff at the beginning of the month, Mr B. Bath taking his place as probationary teacher. Twelve cases of apples were being supplied weekly and these were much appreciated by the children. It was agreed that the committee again affiliate with the Education Federation. A vote of appreciation was accorded the secretary-treasurer for the manner in which the accounts were presented. The visiting committee’s report was adopted. Messrs R. Gallagher and R. Farrow were appointed visiting committee for the month. It was decided to commence meetings at 7.30 p.m. during the winter months. Personal. The Hon. W. E. Barnard was the guest of Mr and Mrs R. Dickson, High Street, during his stay in Eketahuna. Mr R. Duncan had the misfortune to suffer painful injuries to his back and leg on Wednesday when a sheep-crate on which he was working, slipped and pinned him to the ground. His condition is reported to be favourable.
