MARTINBOROUGH

HOME GUARD CONTRIBUTIONS BY LOCAL BODIES. (“Times-Age” Special.) Discussing a communication received from the National Service Board, Mr A. B. Martin, chairman of the Featherston County Council, said yesterday that accounts had to be sent in to the board up to March 31, and any account in excess of Is per member per quarter had to be paid by the local bodies. The chairman said he was definitely opposed to this. If the Home Guard, which was a national organisation, was worth while, this proposal meant that only ratepayers were paying ■ and he could not see why the taxpayer should be penalised. The Dominion should pay for a national service, and not a section only. The defence of the country was everybody’s affair, and he was against any contribution by the local bodies. Councillors generally expressed the same opinion. The communication was received. WOMEN’S DIVISION BUSINESS AT YESTERDAY'S MEETING. At a meeting of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union held yesterday there was a fair attendance of members. Mrs McGarry presided. It was decided to entertain the old people in Greytown Home about the end of June.

It was agreed that members be asked to bring any articles suitable for soldiers’ parcels and the Lady Galway appeal, the same to be handed to the Patriotic Committee to be forwarded to the proper quarter.
