CARTERTON
RACING CLUB T. R. GEORGE TO TRAIN LOCALLY. ("Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Carterton Racing Club stewards presided over by Mr W. Howard Booth, was held in the secretary’s office last evening. There were present: Messrs W. C. Deller, P. Bain, V. L. Robinson, J. C. Harp, E. J. Watson and R. G. Kemble. Apologies for absence were received fi;om Messrs H. J. Brown, F. C. Yule apd C. Jensen. The treasurer reported an overdraft 'at the Bank of New Zealand of £lOlB 14s lid. Receipts since last meeting were £2ll 19s 6d. Accounts amounting to £4 12s 9d were passed. The Minister of Agriculture, Mr Barclay, wrote stating that the Racing Club did not come under the category of farming and therefore lime carried to the racecourse by rail to Clareville was subject to rail charges and could not be carried free. The secretary’s action in giving the use of buildings and the lawn enclosure to the military authorities during recent manoeuvres was endorsed. Mr F. Nicholls, secretary of the Wellington Owners, Trainers and Breeders’ Trotting Association, wrote asking for two trotting races to be included in Carterton’s racing programme for the next and subsequent race meetings. It was decided that the stewards did not feel disposed to entertain the proposal and the secretary was authorised to write thanking .the association for its letter. It was agreed that the programme committee arrange a programme of races and submit same to the next meeting. The secretary reported that he had received telephonic communication from Mr T. R. George that he would be transferring his string of racehorses to Carterton after the Waikato meeting on May 17 and 19 and that the horses would be trained on the Carterton racecourse.
ROAD ACCIDENT YOUNG MAN INJURED. An accident that may have had more serious consequences occurred last evening at about 5 o’clock when a motor truck and a motor cycle came into collision at "the Belvedere' arid Park Road intersections in High Street. It appears that a truck driven by Mr E. Spicer was coming out of Park Road and a cycle ridden by a young man named Gain of South Featherston was proceeding southward when the cycle struck a glancing blow against the other vehicle. Gain was thrown heavily to the tar-sealed road, receiving a cut over the left eye and concussion. He was carried into Mr Lyndon Aplin’s chemist shop and Dr Wells was called. Mr Gain was taken to hospital at Featherston. Basketball Dance. The Band Room was well filled last evening when the Belvedere Basketball Club held a dance in aid of the club funds. Splendid music was played by Mrs V. J. Ashton’s dance orchestra and dancing was kept going merrily till after midnight. Extras were played by Misses R. Jimmieson and L. Hopkins. The duties of M’s.C. 'were capably carried out by Messrs V. J. Ashton and E. Te Tau. The Monte Carlo waltz competition .was won by Miss E. Jenson and Mr D. Burt. Supper was served. Personal, Lawrence, son of Mr and Mrs L. W. Hurndell, of Park Road, Carterton, has received notice of his appointment as a cadet to the Royal Navy. He will leave Carterton .shortly to commence his duties. Personal. Mr and Mrs R. Smith and Son. of Belvedere Street, Carterton, left this morning for Stratford, where they will spend the school holidays with Mrs Smith’s parents. Term Holidays. The Carterton District High School broke up for the term holidays yesterday. Pupils will re-assemble on Monday, May 26. Dance at Dalefield. There is sure to be a good attendance at the Dalefield Hall next Wednesday evening when a social and dance vzill be tendered to Private Stan Joseph. Good music and supper will be provided and patrons are assured of a night’s enjoyment. Prices of admission are advertised in this issue. Tenders. Messrs W. Henry Booth and Son. of Middle Run, Carterton. in an advertisement appearing on page one. call for tenders for scrub cutting at Kokotau.
