LADIES’ AUXILIARY MEETING. MOTHER’S DAY FUNCTIONS. At the monthly meeting of the Y.M.C.A. Ladies’ Auxiliary, held yesterday afternoon in the association’s room, there were 22 members present, the president. Mrs H. E. Pither, presiding. After devotional exercises by the general secretary, the president voiced the company’s pleasure at the attendance of Mrs Kerr who had recently been laid aside through illness. Mesdames Dickel and D. McKenzie were elected to active membership and Mrs C. Mabson to the honorary list. The treasurer reported the finances to be very satisfactory. Final arrangements were completed for the Mother and Son Tea to be held on Monday evening next at 5.45 p.m., the charge being fixed at Is per head, with a reduction where morer than one son attended with his own or adopted mother. The programme arranged will be in keeping with the celebration of Mother’s Day and includes the usual toast and reply, items by Mrs Te Tau’s native entertainers and an address on air raid precautions by Miss Tui Van Stavern, of Wellington. Reports of work accomplished during the recent military manoeuvres were read, as was also a communication from the parents of Mr Cris. Greagor, a one-time assistant of the association here, who was recently posted missing in a Royal Air Force casualty list, but is now believed to be a prisoner of war. A motion of thanks to all who assisted the ladies, including schools, clubs and churches, and others who kindly donated cakes, apples and cigarettes for free distribution to the men taking part in the manoeuvres, was passed.
The fortnightly card party was held last evening when there was an increased attendance in the Society’s Lounge, which was made the more cheery by the warmth of a glowing log fire. The prize-winners were Mrs Coleman and Mr G. Brown at bridge and Mrs Commons with Mr H. E. Gardner in five hundred.
Two English soldier guests, Messrs Finch' and Nichols, of the R.A.M.C., were welcomed at the supper adjournment and in replying expressed their appreciation and thanks for the assistance and good fellowship extended to them by the Y.M.C.A. at the many places they had visited.
