CARTERTON

ENTERTAINING SOLDIERS MEETING OF COMMITTEE. ("Times-Age” Special.) The Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, presided over a meeting of the soldiers’ entertainment committee held last evening. There were also present Messrs J. A. B. Lawrence, E. McKenzie, Geo. Brown and Mesdames Wakelin, Beere, and Fairbrother. The question of the sale of art union tickets for soldier farewell functions was discussed and it was resolved that shopkeepers be asked to dispose of a number of books and that members of ladies’ institutes and Girl Guides be asked to assist. Mr Geo. Brown's offer to send a circular letter throughout the borough for a general appeal for soldiers was accepted with thanks. A function for soldiers is to be held in the Dalefield Dairy Co’s building next week. The question of a shop day was left to the ladies to arrange. HOCKEY TEAMS FOR SATURDAY. The Carterton lady hockey players will be represented in various games tomorrow as under: — Seniors to play Greytown, at Greytown: T. Compton. V, Ward, M. Parker, P. Cadwallader, P. Hemi, D. Dunce, N. Finn, F. Jensen, A. Scott, I. Parker, H.’ Playle. Emergency: M. Reid. The bus will leave the Post Office at 2 o’clock. Junior A, to play Sincerity at Carterton, at 2.15 p.m.: L. Hopkins, B. Parker, B. Matson, D. George, N. Williams, A. Williams, B. Merewood, C. O’Keefe, B. Adlam, H. Corlet, R. Hopkins. Junior B. to play College at Carterton, at 2.15: T. Goodin, B. Berry, P. Jensen, P. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE CARTERTON BRANCH MEETING. The Carterton Women’s Institute held the usual monthly meeting in the Masonic Hall yesterday, when Mrs F. Peters presided over a good attendance of members. The meeting opened with the Ode to Friendship, followed by the Aspiration and Prayer for Peace. It was decided that this institute support a proposal for holding a general conference in 1942. Mrs Woods and Miss Wolters were appointed delegates to attend the meeting of the Women’s War Service Auxiliary. It was decided to forward the usual quota of ten unaddressed gift parcels to overseas forces. Mrs E. Hedley gave an account of the annual council meeting- of the Wairarapa Federation held on April 30. for which she was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The competitions judged by Mrs Adlam of the Parkvale Women’s Institute resulted as follow:—Fruit tart on saucer, Mrs E. Nix 1, Mrs R. H. Grimmer 2, Mrs G. Steffert, Junr. 3. - Best bloom. Mrs J. McKenzie 1. Mrs E. Palmer 2, Mrs A. Adams 3. An amusing competition, guessing the originals of old photographs, caused some merriment, and Mrs Woods was declared the winner. A play entitled “The Crimson Coconut” was produced by members of the Parkvale Women’s Institute and was appreciated, each performer being presented with a shoulder spray, as were also the judges of the competitions. The competitions for next month are: (1) Knitted garment (2), plain scones (3), floating bowl. Miss Wolters spoke of the school for officers to be held in Carterton on June 13, at which it was hoped to have a large attendance. Members agreed to provide morning tea for this meeting.

Odd Fellows’ Lodge. The District Grand Master of the Manchester Unity Order of Odd Fellows has intimated his intention of visiting lodges at Featherston. Greytown and Martinborough in the near future. Church Services. A Church of England service will be held at Parkvale on Sunday at 2 p.m. A service will also be held at Ahiaruhe at 11 a.m. Shifting Camp. A long string of military vehicles from Clareville and Waingawa travelled south through Carterton yesterday * afternoon. Their destination was Tauherenikau, preparatory to crossing the Rimutaka Hill to Paraparaumu where further manoeuvres will take place. Card Afternoon. There was a good attendance at the euchre tournament in the Band Room yesterday afternoon, held under the auspices of the Carterton Women’s Labour League. The prizes were won by Mrs Jackson 1 and Mrs McCarty 2. Afternoon tea was served. Basketball. The following is the Belvedere basketball team to play Carterton at the College at 2.15 p.m.: Goalthrowers, J. Benge, E. Jenson, C. Walker; centres M. Green, D. Garrett, M. Hedley; defence. D. Ashton, R. Jimmison. J. Goodin. Players are to be at the P.O. promptly at 1.45 p.m. Carterton Swimming Club. The annual dance of the Carterton Swimming Club will be held in the Masonic Hall on Monday next. The proceeds of the dance will go toward the farewell to soldiers' fund. These functions are always looked forward to and the Masonic Hall on Monday night should be filled to overflowing. Prices of admission are advertised.
