FIRE BRIGADE MONTHLY MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Eketahuna Municipal Volunteer Fire Brigade was held in the meeting room last night, Superintendent Rogers presiding over a good attendance of members. Accounts amounting to £l4 5s lOd were passed. It was decided to make application 'to the Borough Council for 200 ft. of hose and other working equipment. The secretary was instructed 1o procure service honours for two members. Two nominations for a vacancy for active membership in the brigade were received. Five applications were received for positions as auxiliary firemen, 1 and as the number required is ten it was left to the superintendent and secretary to interview several other likely' candidates. The secretary gave an interesting report of the conference held at Wairoa at Easter and the superintendent also reported on the team's activities at the demonstration. Both officers were accorded hearty votes of thanks. It was decided' that the meetings commence at 7.30 p.m>. during the winter months. It was resolved that all working gear in the possession of members be inspected next practice night. Service honours were presented to Deputy-Superintendent H. Daniel, 2 year bar, completing 17 years; Fireman J. Dickson, 2 year bar, completing 7 years; Fireman H. Leslie, medal, completing 5 years; Fireman R. Fafeita, medal, completing 5 years. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
MEETING AT NTREAHA. Mrs N. Terry presided over an excellent attendance of members and visitors at the monthly meeting of the Nireaha Women’s Institute held yesterday. Mrs Terry cordially welcomed the •visitors. A feature of the meeting was the visit of members of the Eketahuna Institute’s Drama Circle, who provided a sketch entitled “Complications.” This was excellently performed and greatly appreciated, ns were also two elocutionary items entitled “Mrs '/.ri'.s Waiting for the Train,” and "At the Pictures,” given by Miss A. Schultz. A musical parcel game created much merriment, the winner being Mrs Whiteman. A weight-guessing competition for a cake donated bj 7 Mrs Terry was won by Mrs J. Burr, who guessed the correct weight, 21bs. A bring and buy stall, which was conducted by Mesdames J. O’Neil and John Drysdale, did brisk business. Half of the proceeds of the stall will be devoted to the Soldiers’ Parcels Fund. The month’s competitions were wen as follow: —Canadian cake: Mrs J. Hawkins, 1; Mrs A. Golder, 2; Mrs N. Terry, 3. Article made from scraps of wool: Mrs J. Hawkins (hot water bottle cover), 1; Miss L. Shannon (cushion cover), 2; Mrs J, O’Neil (child’s cap), 3. Best bloom: Hazel Davis, 1; Mrs Thomason, 2; Mrs J. Hawkins, 3. The juniors’ competition, a plate of wheatmeal scones, resulted: Vera Drysdale, 1 and 2; Hazel Davis, 3. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames K. Daysh and F. Hansen. Nursing Classes. The Nireaha sub-branch of the Red Cross Society has now commenced home nursing classes and these are being well attended. Army Movements. From an early hour yesterday morning until late in the al’terncon, a convoy of army trucks and motor cycles conveying territorials for the Central District Field manoeuvres, passed through Eketahuna and attracted a great deal of interest. Personal. The Hon. W. E. Barnard. Speaker of the House of Representatives, will arrive in Eketahuna tomorrow and will address a public meeting in lhe evening. On Friday he will proceed to Pcngaroa where he will also deliver an address.
