HAILE SELASSIE
RETURN TO ADDIS ABABA IN TRIUMPH PREPARATIONS IN CAPITAL. PUBLIC ENTHUSIASM. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, May 5. The 'forthcoming re-entry of Emperor Haile Selassie into Addis Ababa, which is being decorated and into which dignatories are crowding, is arousing the deepest enthusiasm among the local population. “The Times” devotes a leading article to the Emperor's personality and his future tasks. It says: “One of the tragedies of the Italian invasion was that the conquerors systematically hunted down and exterminated those young Abyssinians who had received foreign training and upon whom Selassie had largely relied for his work of civilisation and emancipation. This task must now be started over again. “The Emperor has already asked for foreign aid in the reconstruction of his country, and he will rightly seek advisers who will enable Abyssinia to take a part in the modern development of African economy without losing her independence.” Politically and economically, says "The Times.” the assistance which Britain is able to render to the development of the restored Abyssinia will serve as a touchstone of British policy in the future development of colonial Africa.
