BINDING A BOOK
MR H. M. SMITH LECTURES TO MASTERTON ART CLUB. When members of the Masterton Art Club left the club rooms last night, they had an excellent idea of the crafts of bookbinding and fabric printing, the subjects of a talk and demonstrations by Mr H. M. Smith. In introducing Mr Smith, the president. Mr A. E. T. Clemas, said the craft of bookbinding was at least sixteen centuries old. During its long history it had first been closely associated withprinting and then, in more modern times, it had developed into a highly specialised individual craft, the secrets of which often wore handed down from father to son, for generations. With the implements of his craft laid out on a trestle table before his audience. Mr Smith demonstrated in detail each step in bookbinding from the repairing of the tattered book to its final appearance. securely and handsomely bound. Mr Smith concluded by offering his help and advice to any members who might wish to learn bookbinding oi- fabric printing. He was accorded a vote of thanks, and answered many questions from interested members.
