MASTERTON STOCK SALE

FAT EWES REALISE GOOD PRICES. Fat ewes were up in price at the Masterton stock sale today. No pigs were yarded. Bidding was brisk from a large bench of buyers. Prices were: — Sheep':—Fats: Ewes, 10s 4d, 12s, 12s 3d, 12s 4d; maiden ewes, 10s 3d; wethers, 21s 6d, 21s lOd, 235. Fat lambs, 18s to 18s 9d. Masterton Harriers. Members of the Masterton Harrier Club will hold another friendly run on Saturday, from the Park Oval,' at 2.30 p.m. Junior members are particularly requested to attend. Impressment of Rifles. One third of the total number of .303 rifles in the district have been handed in to the Masterton Police Station, under the impressment scheme. Impressment notices sent out by the National Service Department, Wellington, have not yet reached some owners. It is anticipated that the majority of rifles will have been handed in by the end of the week. Aid for Flood Victims. The president of the Wairarapa Centre of the New Zealand Red Cross Society, Mi - Norman Lee, has received a telegram from the New Zealand Red Cross Society offering assistance from the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, 1936, to flood victims in the district, and expressing its sympathy. All subcentres throughout the district have been communicated with and further details are awaited concerning the position in the Alfredton area. Card Party. The Ladies' Auxiliary of the Y.M.C.A. are holding another of their popular card parties tomorrow evening al 7.45 o’clock in the large rooms of ° the Y.M.C.A. These evenings are not only proving successful but are thoroughly enjoyed by all who attend. The auxiliary would be grateful if the regular attenders could bring friends and could help the auxiliary in its efforts, towards its worthy objects. A home-made supper will be provided by the ladies. Sheep Killings. In a discussion with the Minister of Agriculture yesterday, the New Zealand Meat Producers' Board urged that, because of the serious position of farmers in the North Island as a result of the recent widespread flooding in many districts, reconsideration should be given by the Government to the present restrictions in the killings of sheep. 'Die board also renewed its representations with regard to the South Island sheep killings, and again stressed the need for urgent relief. Mr W. Holmes’s Tour. A civic reception was accorded Mr William Holmes, veteran representative of the British Labour movement, on his arrival at Timaru yesterday by the Mayor, Mr W. G. Tweedy. The Minister of Labour, Mr Webb, was associated with the Mayor in the welcome. Mr Holmes paid a tribute to the lead New Zealand had given in social legislation, and said older countries were still learning something from the Dominion. Last night Mr Holmes addressed a large audience. During the afternoon he visited some industries in the town. Parcels for Prisoners of War.

Information has been received from Messrs Thomas Cook and Son of the discontinuance of the system under which food parcels for prisoners ot war were despatched by the firm s London Office. This arrangement is. therefore, to be disregarded in future and the only means now available for getting food parcels to prisoners of war is through the Red Cross. The New Zealand Red Cross has an arrangement with the British Rod Cross under which the last mentioned organisation provides “food" parcels for New Zealand prisoners of war interned abroad. Persons desiring further information in this matter are advised to communicate with the nearest branch of. the New Zealand Red Cross.
