HEAVY BOMBERS
INCREASE IN AMERICAN PRODUCTION WITH ALL POSSIBLE SPEED ORDERED BY PRESIDENT. DETERMINATION TO GAIN COMMAND OF AIR. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) WASHINGTON, May 5. President Roosevelt has sent a letter to the Secretary for War, Mr Stimson, urging an increase in the production of heavy bombers with all possible speed. “Command of the air by the democracies must and can be achieved,” the President said. “Every month,” he added, “air forces of the democracies are gaining in relative strength. We must see to it that the process is hastened and democratic superiority in the air made absolute.” President Roosevelt gave Mr Stimson carte blanche authority to take whatever steps are necessary to achieve this goal. The President said he was ordering the Office for Production Management to provide appropriate priority ratings to prepare for allout production. Mr Stimson will make a nationwide broadcast on Tuesfliy night (1.30 p.m. on Wednesday, /New Zealand time). He is expected to make an important announcement on defence plans.
