TE WHARAU

HEAVY RAIN MUCH DAMAGE TO ROADS. (“Times-Age” Special.) Rain commenced to fall here early on Saturday morning and for the thirty-six hours following 91 inches were recorded. All rivers and creeks were in heavy flood and much damage was done to roads. All fords were washed out and road traffic is held up with slips. WAR WORK DISTRICT LADIES ACTIVE. The ladies of this district have formed themselves into a committee and are working very hard on war work, their first undertaking being to provide clothing and comforts for British refugees, who have suffered so much through enemy air raids. With this object in view they have the first case, of goods ready to be dispatched to* headquarters, to be sent overseas. The committee would be very grateful to anyone who has no further use for any left-off clothing that would be •suitable to be made up into garments for the unfortunate victims. 1 Realising that such an organisation cannot carry out its objective without funds, it has been decided to hold a dance in the hall on Saturday evening 'next, the whole of the proceeds to be devoted to the above cause. The dance is sure to be well patronised. The ladies have-all details connected with this function well in hand. The floor will be in good order, the supper will be up to the usual excellent standard and there will be novelty dances and competitions and altogether the prospects of the evening's entertainment promises to eclipse all previous efforts. Golf. Owing to the deluge of rain during the weekend all golf was postponed. Some good cards were handed in the previous week, showing that some players have struck form early in the season. The best for the ladies was Mrs Schofield 85, 22, 63, and for the men S. Gray 78, 12, 66 did best. It is to be hoped that next playing day the competitions will be commenced in earnest.
