SCHOOL COP4MITTEE (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Carterton District High School held last evening, was presided over by Mr H. • J. McKenzie and the following committeemen were present: —Messrs W. E. Knowles (secretary), J. Finn (treasurer), B. E. Clarke, C. K. Goodin, and G. Stark. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs Williams, Beere, and Rabbitts. It was reported Mr A. G. Rabbitts was making good progress towards re- •' covery and would soon be able to leave Masterton Hospital. / The Wellington Education Board wrote enclosing £22 13s Id as the May capitation grant. Accounts amounting to £29 2s 4d were passed. The chairman reported he had engaged a man to sweep surplus sand from the concrete base at the school and his action was endorsed. The Wellington Education Board notified that an educative film had been provided to enable school children to see the progress that had been accomplished during the past century of New Zealand. The film was entitled “One Hundred Crowded Years,” and was 5000 feet in length. The film would be exhibited in Carterton later and the whole of the proceeds would be given to patriotic purposes. It was resolved by the committee that children be given the opportunity to see same at a charge of 6d admission. It was reported that the annual meeting of the Dental Clinic would be held in the school on Wednesday, May 28. It was agreed to ask the Wellington Education Board to paint the picket , fence at the Secondary School. The annual meeting of the School Calf Club will be held next Friday at I. p.m. at the P. and A. building. P. & A. SOCIETY NOMINATIONS OF OFFICERS. The following nominations have been received for officers and committee of the Wairarapa and East Coast Pastoral and Agricultural Society. There will be a ballot for the committee at the annual meeting of the society to be held on Saturday:—President, Mr J. A. McLeod; vice-president, Mr 0. A. Robbins, V. L. Robinson. YOUNG FARMERS , TEAMS FOR STOCK JUDGING. The monthly meeting of the Carterton Young Farmers’ Club was held last evening, Mr J. Rose presiding over an attendance of 17 members. Stock judging teams for the interclub contest on May 30 were appointed as follow:—Pigs, Messrs J. Rose. H. McKenzie; Romneys. Messrs A. Fisher, M. Rose; Southdowns, Messrs I. Thompson. T. Orr. Junior team, under 18: Fresians, K. Ordish, M. Renall; Southdowns, N. Hannah; Romneys, H. Staples, G. Rayner; pigs, T. Hercock, R. McKenzie. It was decided to ask Mr H. B. Keenan to speak on “Electricity on the Farm.” The following new members were elected: Messrs M. Renall, R. Goodin. T. Hercock. Two debates were held: “That the dog has contributed more to farming than the horse.” and “That Science has proved a benefit to mankind.” Those taking part were Messrs A. Fisher, F. ‘ Ward, G. Rayner, W. Campin, N. Hannah, H. M. Staples, B. Brasell, S. Fisher, P. Swinn and M. Knutson. Supper was served. DRUIDS’ LODGE SOCIAL SECURITY SERVICE. Totara Lodge No. 3 United Ancient Order of Druids met last night. Arch Druid Bro. C. W. Smith presiding. Prior to proceeding with ordinary business reference was made by several members to the death of the Grand Secretary, Bro. John H. Laughton, by several members. A vote of condolence with Mrs Laughton and family was carried in silence. Correspondence from the Dominion Friendly Societies Council concerning the Social Security medical service was read in which it was pointed out that as things were present whatever was done could only be by agreement between the lodges, medical institutes and similar organisations. Lodge members were advised to pay ordinary lodge doctors and if a refund was re- . ceived from the Social Security fund of the amount paid it would be credited to the member. Further arrangements in connection ■ with the annual ball which will take place in the King's' Theatre, Carterton, . on Monday, May 26, were made. The : combined committees will meet in the i Foresters’ Hall on Friday next, at 7.30 p.m. Sick pay and accounts amounting to , £22 16s Bd, including £5 15s, were i passed. Next lodge night, May 19, will be the half yearly meeting when the election of officers will be held. , < Farewell to Lieutenant Lawrence. ] On Saturday evening about 40 i friends of Lieut. Rex Lawrence as- , scmbled to meet the guest of the even- ( ing. A pleasant evening was spent, the ( hostesses being Mesdames J. Steel, R. ;
T. Forbes. L. J. Fairbrther, and Miss Freer. During the evening, on behalf of those present, Mr Jas. Steel referred to the happy relationship that existed between their guest - and his many friends and they had decided that he should not leave Carterton without some acknowledgment. On behalf of the guests he asked Lieut. Lawrence to accept a case of brushes and a chamois money belt. He hoped their guest would have good health and good luck while on active service and that he would return to Carterton covered with honour. Cheers and the singing of “For He's a Jolly Good Fellow” followed. Lieut. Lawrence replied. Personal. Misses Joyce and Thelma Goodin, of Roto-Orangi, Cambridge, are visiting relatives in Carterton. Mr and Mrs C. C. Callender, who have been on holiday to Paraparaumu, have returned to Carterton. Mr Baker, who has been relieving' Mr Callender at the Bank of New Zealand. with Mrs Baker left Carterton today for Waipawa. At the meeting of the Carterton Women's Division yesterday members stood in silence as a mark of respect to the late Mr John Standen. Carrington Rainfall. Mr J. A. Roberts, of Carrington, reports the rainfall for April as 3.40 inches. There were 13 wet days, the heaviest fall occurring on April 13, 1.05 inches. The total fall for April, 1940. was 4.02 inches. During the heavy fall of rain in the past fevz days. 3.87 inches were registered on Saturday night.
