OTHER PEOPLE’S IDEAS
TREES IN THE BOROUGH (To the Editor.) Sir, — I notice in the “Times-Age" of today a letter from Mr W. Chunn headed “Trees in the Borough.” Mr Chunn says I explained the method adopted by the council of putting the names of the streets in a hat, and those drawn out were the lucky ones and were planted with trees. Might I make a slight correction and an explanation re this matter. The names of the first three streets that were planted were drawn from a hat by the Beautifying Society, not the Borough Council. Since then, the method has been and still is as follows: If the citizens tn any street wish trees planted there, they apply to the secretary of the Beautifying Society, and if the society agree to the idea, it is then referred to the Borough Council for confirmation or rejection as the case may be. And, as no one from. Bannister Street has ever, to my knowledge, applied to the Beautifying Society asking that this street be planted, no action has ever been taken. It is a strange thing that while some people are keen to have their streets planted, others who already have trees in front of their residences are not at all pleased about it. If a petition from Bannister Street residents asking that trees be planted in their street was handed to the Beautifying Society no doubt the matter would receive careful consideration. Thanking vou for space.—l am. etc., H. E. GARDNER. Maslerton. May 5.
