PETROL RATION

FURTHER CUT MADE IN AUSTRALIA. NEED OF SUBSTANTIAL SAVING (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyrighti (Received This Day 10 a.m.) MELBOURNE. This Day. Further cuts in petrol allowances were announced by Senator P. A. McBride, Supply Minister, last night. The new ration scale provides a rate of 2000 miles per annum for private cars and cycles. In the case of cars used for private and business purposes, there is to be a 20 per cent cut on the existing allowance. General goods vehicles are cut 10 per cent, and taxi and tourist vehicles by two-thirds of the prerationing mileage. Mr Mcßride said the change was designed to achieve the original purpose of a return to one-third of the pre-war civil consumption in the first six months, rationing having only resulted in a 16 per cent saving. Detailed scales, he said, would be announced shortly, and would continue to be based on the horse-power of vehicles.
