OBITUARY
SIR JAMES/PARR. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 9.55 a.m.) LONDON. May 2. The death occurred of Sir James Parr, early this morning, after a brief illness. The late Sir James Parr was born in Cambridge, New Zealand, in 1869. He was educated at primary schools at Waihou and Thames and at the Auckland University Grammar School and Auckland University College. He was admitted as a barrister in 1890 and practised at Coromandel and Auckland. For a period he was chairman of the Auckland Education Board and was Mayor of Auckland from 1911 to 1915. He represented the electorate of Eden from 1914 to 1926 and held the portfolio of Minister of Education from 1920-23, and that of Justice and Postmaster-General from 1924-1926, when he was appointed High Commissioner for New Zealand in London, a position he held for three years and for a second term from 1933 to 1936. He represented New Zealand on the League of Nations from 1926 to 1930 and was a member of the Imperial Defence Commission. Empire Marketing Board. Imperial Shipping Commission. He returned to New Zealand in 1931 and was appointed Leader of the Legislative Council, a position which he relinquished on his reappointment as High Commissioner. He was created a C.M.G. in 1914, a K.C.M.G. in 1924 and G.C.M.G. in 1935.
