Swift Captoe of Dessie ITALIANS HAD HOPED TO HOLD OUT FOR THREE MONTHS A Cairo communique announces that 7,900 prisoners, 'including 5,500 Italians, were captured by British forces during and after the occupation of Dessie in Abyssinia. Among them were a ‘number of senior Italian officers. Ninety-three enemy guns were also taken, but the full amount of war material cannot yet be assessed. A Nairobi communique describes the capture of Dessie as a considerable victory. South African infantry, armoured units and artillery took in 10 days prepared positions which the Italians had expected to hold for three months.
