MADE BY ENEMY INFANTRY AND TANKS
Some Penetration of Outer Defences AXIS TRANSPORT HARRIED BY NAVY AND AIR FORCE BIG CAPTURES OP MEN AND MATERIAL IN ABYSSINIA LONDON, May 1. A Middle East communique states that the latest enemy attack on Tobruk is the strongest and most determined yet made. Infantry in some strength, supported by numerous tanks, were launched against the outer deefnces last evening and by this morning a penetration had been made. Fighting continues but details are not yet available. Enemy positions near Tobruk are being’ severely harassed by the Navy and the Air Force. The Navy bombarded enemy transports and supplies 40 miles west of Tobruk. British fighters machine-gunned at least 100 motor vehicles, 30 of which, containing troops, were hit and damaged, 20 bursting into flames. A German plane was also shot down. At a point 45 miles south-east of Solium, four Messerschmitts attacking British forces were intercented and two were severely damaged.
