General de Gaulle, in a broadcast to France, said: "French workers, by treating May 1 in dignified silence, will show their contempt for traitors and their hope of deliverance." The Burgomaster of Brussels has banned street demonstrations from May 1 to May 10. Moscow had a Labour procession and a military review. M. Timoshenko, in a speech, said: “The Red Army is ready to offer an annihilating rebuff to any imperialistic encroachments. The Red Army must keep its powder dry, so that no accident and no tricks of our enemies can catch us unawares.”
