HEAVIEST YET
ENEMY RAID ON MALTA MUCH DAMAGE TO CIVILIAN PROPERTY. STRONG DEFENCE BY GUNS & FIGHTERS. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) MALTA, May 1. A large formation of .Junkers and Messerschmitts attacked Malta. One Junkers was destroyed. Civilian properly was heavily damaged, particularly in an important business thoroughfare. Eight civilians were killed, and nineteen seriously injured. Il was Malta’s heaviest raid. Malta has been consistently raided all the week. Many Hares and bombs were dropped, and a number of buildings were wrecked on the previous night. A strong defence was put up by guns and fighters. The rock shelters kept casualties low. It is officially stated that two German bombers and probably a fighter have been destroyed in the past 24 hours over Malta. One-was a Junkers 88. which was first hit by anti-aircraft fire and then finished off by a British fighter. The crew baled out and were taken prisoner.
