LINEN FLAX
EXPERIMENTS BEING MADE IN WAIRARAPA. DISTRICT'S POSSIBILITIES. “Although on general principles it was not expected that linen flax would be a successful crop under North Island conditions there is, up to the present, no specific experimental evidence to support or disprove this belief,” states Mr N. Lamont, of the Department of Agriculture, Masterton. “This year, however, steps are being taken to obtain definite knowledge on the subject and experimental areas are being established with this end in view. Arrangements have been made for the sowing of 5 acre areas on three different soil types this autumn and these will be duplicated in the spring. “As the number of these large trials that can be handled is necessarily very limited it is intended to establish also a large number of small plots under a variety of conditions, both autumn and spring sown. In this connection the co-operation of Young Farmers’ Clubs is being sought and an opportunity is being provided for clubs to perform a very useful service to the district. These plots will be j-chain square in size and will be hand sown and if necessary hand prepared.” Any Young Farmers interested are requested to get in touch with Mr Lamont immediately.
