FEATHERSTON
HOME GUARD DISTRICT ACTIVITIES. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Featherston District Home Guard numbers are now well on toward the 200 mark. Commander Hayes has made his selections, and the necessary officers and n.c.o’s. are now confirmed in their positions. When attending the weekly parade at the Town Hall on Tuesday last, your representative had an opportunity of seeing these young men at work. With blackboard and chalk three separate classes were being initiated into the mysteries of the Lewis gun, by young n.c.os. who faced up to the job like veterans. When questions were invited the resultant discussion showed a keenness which augurs well for the future of the Featherston unit. Time was also spent on rifle sighting and'loading positions, squad drill and field exercises. The signallers were hard at it in another room and their instructor, Sergt. Halpin, reports good progress. Tonight, Commander Hayes, one or two of his officers, and a carload of rifles are journeying to Pihautea, when instruction in this arm will be given. On Sunday next, May 4, the unit parades at 10 a.m. and after a short service the rest of the day will be given over to field exercises.
GOLF LADIES’ COMPETITIONS. There was a good attendance at the opening of the Featherston Ladies’ Golf Club yesterday afternoon. A 9hole eclectic competition was played, ’ the results being: Mrs Elbe 1, Miss N. Johns 2, Miss O. Nix 3. The following officers were elected for the coming season: Captain, Mrs J. B. Davis; vice-captain, Miss E. Williams; secretary, Mrs R. Donald; committee, Mesdames S. Batcheler, W. Connell and W. Pope. A Stableford competition will be held at the “Gum Grove” links on Saturday by the men. NATIONAL SAVINGS FEATHERSTON DISTINCTION. Featherston has won the coveted distinction of flying the National Savings bag, which is awarded to the leading town in the Wellington district, having the largest percentage of National Savings accounts in proportion to the district population. This honour is largely due to the enthusiastic help given the Post Office staff by a number of patriotic citizens, who gave wholehearted support in furthering the movement, by enrolling new members. To maintain enthusiasm, donations were also given by public spirited citizens. It behoves the Featherston public,, who have not already opened an account in the National Savings scheme, to do so at once, and endeavour to keep the flag flying, and at the same time lend to defend the right to be free.
Personal. Mr Gordon Cundy, who recently underwent an operation in the Dannevirke Hospital, is reported to be progressing satisfactorily. The fire brigade euchre tourney on Tuesday night was well attended. The winners were Mrs Worsley and Mrs Neilson (equal) and Mr E. Walker and Private W. Higgison. Presentation. Mr A. J. M. Leslie, of the Featherston Post Office staff, was the recipient' of a travelling bag from his fellow officers on his transfer to Huntly. Mr Davis, Postmaster, when making the presentation, referred to the sterling qualities of Mr Leslie, and expressed regret at his departure.
