WOMEN READY
TO ASSIST COUNTRY’S WAR EFFORT. OBSERVATIONS BY APPEAL BOARD CHAIRMAN. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. “The women of this country are anxious to do something for the war effort, ’’ said Mr Stilwell, S.M., chairman of the board in an exemption appeal against military service. The case was that of an analytical chemist. “I am quite sure young women who graduated as bachelors of science would be prepared, if approached in the right way, to step into industry for the period of the war at least.” The representative of the company making the appeal said attempts had not been made to fill chemists’ positions with women graduates. To secure men was practically impossible. The appeal was adjourned sine die in the national interest. It was pointed out that employers would have to release the chemist if the Crown wanted his services.
