BOLD VENTURE
BRITISH SUBMARINE IN ENEMY PORT ATTEMPT TO RESCUE MINISTER & STAFF. DEPARTURE WITH HOSTAGE ON BOARD. LONDON. April 39. An audacious attempt by the Bi'itish submarine Regent to embark Mr Ronald Campbell, British Minister in Yugoslavia and his staff, after the Nazi invasion of Yugoslavia, is described in an Admiralty communique. At dawn on April 26, the Regent arrived at an Adriatic port to find the whole area in Italian occupation. An officer landed to call on the Italian military officer and to search for the British Minister, and an Italian staff officer went on the submarine as a hostage. The submarine was in port, surrounded by large forces of the Italian army, for nine hours, when suddenly it was attacked by two Italian dive' bombers, which dropped several bombs and machine-gunned the submarine the Commander and one pettyofficer being wounded. The Regent dived and left safely, passing through two minefields, with the Italian hostage still on board.
