FEATHERSTON
ANZAC DAY OBSERVANCE AT CEMETERY AND HALL. (“Times-Age" Special.) The weather was gloriously fine for the Anzac Day service yesterday. In the morning school children were taken to the cemetery, and after an address by the Mayor (Mr J. W. Card) each child placed' 1 flags and sprays of rosemary on the soldiers’ graves. In the afternoon a service was held in the Anzac Hall, where there was a large attendance. A stirring address was given by the Rev. J. R. Higgs. Speaking of the last war, he said that lives lost then had not been sacrificed in vain. Throughout the whole of his address Mr Higgs struck an optimistic note. He referred to his experience in Hong Kong and other parts of China and the horrors of war he had seen in that country and also to many refugees he had met who had been driven from Germany and who had given him first hand information of the suffering they had undergone. After the service ex-servicemen, the Home Guard, Boy Scouts and Girl Guides marched to the memorial, proceeded by the Masterton Municipal Band. Wreaths were placed oil the memorial after which the Last Post was sounded. Later Mr and Mrs Card entertained the band, ex-servicemen and friends at afternoon tea at their home.
Wreaths were sent by the following:—Schools, local and district, R.S.A., South African Veterans, Borough Council, Mayor and Mayoress, Patriotic Society, Red Cross, Plunket Society, Racing Club, Automobile Association, Odd Fellows, Women’s National Reserve, Masonic Lodge, Anglican Church and Guild.
