Mr J. G. McFarlane, of the Department of Agriculture, Masterton, has returned from a holiday in the Auckland district.
The death occurred on Thursday of Mr Alexander William Charleson, of College Street, Masterton, a wellknown and highly respected resident of Masterton. The funeral is a private one.
The first Polish Consul-General to be appointed to New' Zealand, Professor K. Wodzicki, has arrived at Auckland from London on his way to Wellington, where he will take up office. The professor, who is accompanied by his wife and their two children, was formerly professor of biology at Warsaw University College of Agriculture. The funeral of the late Mrs Amelia Rossiter, Mauriceville, took place at the Masterton Cemetery on Thursday afternoon. There was a large attendance. Services at the chapel and graveside were conducted by Messrs R. H. Brewerton and J. Liement, of the Gospel Brethren. The pall-bearers were Messrs G. Stevenson, F. Brooks, G. Garrett, H. Myers Junr., N. Myers Junr., and R. Russel],
Bearing a message of goodwill from organised labour in the United Kingdom to the workers of New Zealand and Australia, Mr William Holmes, past-president of the Trades Union Congress of Great Britain, arrived at Wellington yesterday from Auckland. He was met at the Wellington Railway Station by the Prime Minister. Mr Fraser, and Mrs Fraser, and was also welcomed by representatives of organised labour.
