CARTERTON

MAGISTRATE’S COURT CIVIL AND POLICE CASES. ("Times-Age” Special.) The monthly sitting of the Magistrate’s Court was held yesterday. Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., presided. In the following civil cases judgment was given for plaintiff by default: — Carterton Borough Council v. W. B. Watkins, claim £l4 18s 6d with costs £1 3s, and solicitor’s fee £1 Ils. W. Vaughan v. A. W. Herrick, claim £7 9s lOd, court costs 15s, solicitor’s fee 15s 6d. In a judgment summons case, the Carterton District Co-operative Society Ltd. v. T. W. Bond, claim £3 6s 6d. there was no appearance of defendant who was' ordered to pay the sum claimed forthwith, in default 3 days’ imprisonment in Wellington gaol. Reginald H. Emerson, Ernest Governor and Thomas Rimini, charged with being on licensed premises (Royal Oak Hotel), on March. 14 after hours, were each i fined £1 and costs 10s. Wm. E. Field was charged with operating a motor car and not carrying a warrant of fitness. He pleaded guilty and was fined 5s with 10s costs. Traffic officer C. S. Nicolson proceeded against E. J. Thomas charging that on March 8 he drove a car in a manner which having regard to all the circumstances of the case might have been dangerous to the public. Defendant was fined 30s and costs. Barry Riley was also proceeded against by Mr Nicholson for not having a current drivers’ licence. Defendant was fined 10s. GOLF CARTERTON CLUB DRAW. The following is the draw for the first medal round of the captain’s trophy to be played on the links at Clareville on Saturday:— From No. 1 tee: Riggs and Shankland; Booth and Fisher; Hart and Hill; Brown and Dudson; Goodin and Harrington; Candy and Nicholls; Knutson and Pankhurst; Colson and Dwane. From No. 3 tee: Roydhouse and Smart; Steel and Taverner; Gustofson and Whitburn; Forbes and Clarke; Taylor and Johansen. From No. 17. tee: Barrett and Harry; Tankersley and Pankhurst; Beaven and Jackson. Any members not included in the draw will arrange their own partners and start from 17th tee.

ANZAC DAY TOMORROW'S CELEBRATIONS, At the Anzac Day Memorial Service to be held in Carterton tomorrow, exservicemen, Territorials, Home Guards, Boy Scouts, Cubs, Girl Guides and others will take part in a procession to the Memorial Square, where wreaths will be placed upon the Cenotaph by the R.S.A., schools, friendly societies and other institutions, besides parents. The procession will be headed by the Carterton Silver Band-and members of the Wairarapa Pipe Band. After the .ceremony at the Memorial Square an Anzac memorial service will be held in the afternoon at the Regent Theatre. The Anzac address will be given by the Rev. W. J. Couling and the band will supply music for the hymns. LADIES’ GOLF MEDAL ROUND DRAW. The following players will take part in a medal round to be played on Saturday at the Taratahi links by members of the Carterton Golf Club:—Miss Berrill and Mrs Orr; Mrs’ Moroney and Mrs Harrington; Miss Campbell and Mrs Candy; Mrs Murray and' Mrs Johansen; Mrs Colson and Miss Freer; Miss Booth and Mrs Pointon; Miss Lamb and Miss I. Corlet; Mrs Robinson and Miss Lawrence; Miss Armstrong and Miss Hamer; Miss Peters and Mrs Forbes; Miss Orr and Miss V. Corlet; Miss McFarlane and Mrs Goodin. A draw will be made at. the Clubhouse for new members. Miss Lindop, Miss Johnson, Miss Hurley, Mrs Rogers, Mrs Knowles, Mrs Martin and Miss Bredin. The afternoon tea arrangements will be supervised by Miss Berrill and Miss Campbell. FOOTBALL CARTERTON v. GREYTOWN. At the Showgrounds, Carterton, on Saturday the Carterton and Greytown senior fifteens will play a friendly game. The local team will be represented as under:—C. Jensen, J. Brown, Geo. Brown, E. Thompson, M. Hurley, F. Fitzgerald. J. Tilyard, T. Te Waita. Busch. B. Warrington, A. Blake, 11. and A. Mathieson. T. Mason, N. McPhee, Q. Desmond, A. Deller. Personal. Mrs R. T. Forbes, of Kent Street, who has been on holiday to Auckland, has returned to Carterton. Constable and Mrs J. D. Gillies who have been to Dunedin on holiday have returned to Carterton. Boy Scouts. The usual weekly card evening under the jurisdiction of the Carterton Boy Scout Movement was held last evening. The prizes were won by Mesdames W. Herdman and Mahoe and Messrs K. Hodder and Wadsworth. Home and School Association. There was a poor attendance at the fortnightly five hundred card tournament held in the Band Room on Tuesday evening under the auspices of the Home and School Association. Prizes were won as follow: —Ladies: Mesdames Challis. 1; Daysh, 2. Men: Messrs G. Goodin, 1; Hollings, 2 Dance. A dance in aid of the Belvedere Bas-•

ketball Club will be held in the Band Room, Holloway Street, Carterton, tonight. A good evening’s enjoyment is assured and the dance music will be played' by Mrs Ashton's Orchestra. A good supper will be provided. Yesterday’s Southerly Storm. The sudden southerly storm which passed over the Wairarapa Valley yesterday forenoon brought with it a cold snap and this morning the Tararua Ranges are capped with a good coating of snow. Severe and early frosts may be experienced. Church Service. A Church of England service will be held at Waihakeke on Sunday at 2 p.m.
