ST. GEORGE’S DAY
ADDRESS BY THE MAYOR OF NEW YORK DEFENCE OF THE SEAS. SHARE OF UNITED STATES & CANADA. (Received This Day, 12.30 p.m.) OTTAWA. April 23. The Mayor of New York, Mr F. A. La Guardia, addressing a St George’s Day luncheon gathering of the Canadian Club, and the Canadian Federation of Mayors, said Canada and the United States were prepared to defend the seas for three hours’ travel from the North American shores, “and when I say three hours, I mean the distance an aeroplane, going at 333 miles an hour, can travel in three hours.” Mr Ln Guardia, recalling that St George lived sixteen hundred years ago, assured them ..that sixteen hundred years hence the day of England’s patron saint would be celebrated as usual. AMERICAN PLANS SUPPLY OF ESCORT CRAFT. (Received This Day, Noon.) WASHINGTON, April 23. Stating that the twenty fast naval torpedo-boats mentioned in an earlier message were ready for delivery to Britain and possibly were on their way now, Colonel Knox (Secretary of the Navy) said the boats had been shipped across rather than let them undertake the Atlantic voyage under their own power. Colonel Knox told his Press conference also that the Navy was negotiating with Canada for the construction in Canada of a number of warships of the new British corvette type, such as were used to escort convoys. Mr Frank Mason, vice-president of the National Broadcasting Company, will enter the Navy’s public relations division on May 1 to handle publicity matters pertaining to broadcasting.
