FEATHERSTON

FARMERS’ UNION BRANCH ANNUAL MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) The annual meeting of the Featherston branch of the Farmers’ Union was held last night. Mr H. J. Hutchings presided over a good attendance. . The chairman spoke on the More Production campaign and the effort made, in which many farmers grew crops which did not pay them. In many cases they Were not receiving interest on their capital. He considered that all farmers should be thanked for their efforts.

Mr R. E. Crawford considered the Union would never get very far just by criticising. It should give constructive criticism; If production was further increased the county would be faced with a surplus for some time; He. advocated state control of currency. At the end of His address he was accorded a vote of thanks. The election of officers resulted: — President, Mr H. J. Hutchings; vicechairman, Mr E. E. O’Neale; committee, Messrs W. J. Hutchings, A. J. Rendle, R. E. Crawford, R. M. R. Cole, R. R. P. Hardy, W. J. Feast, R. T. Pillar; delegates to Provincial executive, Messrs H. J. Hutchings, R. E. Crawford, A. J. Rendle; delegates to Inter-pro-vincial conference, Messrs H. J. Hutchings, A. J. Rendle, and R. T. Pillar. Those present considered that more meetings should be held. The secretary pointed out that owing to the shortage of petrol he had scarcely enough petrol to do the round of annual meetings. He suggested meetings could be held and the reports forwarded to him. Mr R. R. P. Hardy was appointed minutes secretary.

The following remit is to be forwarded to the Provincial Executive: “That the Government be asked tp legislate for the issue and control of money by a National credit authority, this to consist of two representatives from the workers, one from the primary producers and one from the secondary industries, to be presided over by the Minister of Finance.” Leader Page gH pk.

BIBLE SOCIETY

ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the British and Foreign Bible Society was held on Monday. Mrs Arch Clark presided. The election of officers resulted: President, Mrs R. S. Keenan; vicepresidents, Mesdames Arch Clark, Bladen and Peene; secretary-treasurer, Mr H. Hunter. The resignation of the retiring president, Mrs J. T. Holland,.Was accepted with regret. A letter of appreciation is to be sent to him. The Rev. D. Calder gave an interesting talk on the work of the society in various countries. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames Peene, Arch. Clark, and Bladen. Croquet. Members of the Hanui Croquet Club were the guests of the president, Miss Eva Card, for a croquet day yesterday, when half hour games were played. Miss Card provided luncheon and during the afternoon tea presented the various trophies won. Mrs Wakeley thanked Miss Card for one of the most pleasant days this season. Results of the day’s play were: A section, Miss Esma Card; runner-up, Miss M. Nix. B section, Mrs Rasmussen; runner-up, Mrs Davis. Most improved beginner, Mrs Wilson. League Mothers. The monthly meeting of the League of Mothers was held in the Parish Hall. Mrs Arch. Clark presided. The speaker was the Rev. F. A. Ball, Vicar, Martinborough, who spoke on Christianity. He was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The hostesses were Mesdames Chas. Buck, J. Blain, and W. Boston. . Bowling Green Closed. The Bowling Club has iclosed its green which is to be topdressed and fresh seed sown. e Anzac Day Service. The speaker at the Anzac Day service to be held in the Anzac Hall on Friday will be the Rev. J. R. Higgs, a recent arrival from Hong Kong, with first hand information of Japanese air raids and bombings. Personal. Miss Jean Houston has-left for Wellington to take up her duties in the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force. Miss Houston is the first local girl to join this new service, which is being organised by Mrs lan Carlyon. National Savings. A young Featherston schoolgirl, Miss Anne Harkness, was agreeably surprised on Monday when she was informed that she was the winner of the “mystery” envelope, donated by Mr Stuart Reid, for presentation to the person opening the 625th National Savings account.
