APPEAL BOARD
MEN FOR OVERSEAS SERVICE SITTING IN MASTERTON. HEARING OF WAIRARAPA APPLICATIONS. A sitting of the No. 4 Armed Forces Appeal Board was held at the Masterton Courthouse today. Mr W. F. Stilwell. S.M., presided, with whom was associated Messrs A. Parlane and P. Coyle. Mr C. O. Bell represented the Crown.
An appeal against military service, on the grounds of undue hardship, lodged by Gertrude May Aydon on behalf of Francis Nelson Aydon, shop assistant, was dismissed, »■
The estate of James McGovern (Mr S. R. Gawith) appealed for the postponement of military service of Ronald James McGovern, farmer. Mr Gawith stated that the appeal had been lodged on the grounds of public interest and undue hardship but since the appeal had been lodged the appellant had been able to make arrangements to release him for military service. With the consent of Mr Bell the appeal was withdrawn.
Mr Gawith also asked that an appeal on similar grounds by Lewis Welch on behalf of Laurence Albert Welch, farm hand, be withdrawn owing to the same position having arisen. The application was granted. John Campbell lodged an appeal on the grounds of public interest and undue hardship, against military service on behalf of Ratanui Hugh Campbell, sheep farm labourer. The appeal was dismissed.
Aulder William Fawcett, butcher, appealed for a postponement of military service until July 30 on the grounds of undue hardship and public interest. Mr R. R. Burridge, who appeared for the appellant Stated that the appeal was made to allow Fawcett to wind up his business affairs. A postponement until June 30 was granted. An application by the Director of National Service to have Maurice Charles Doyle, dairy farmer, exempted from military service was dismissed.
The appellant stated that he had no objections to military service but the appeal had come from the Department. The Wairarapa Hospital Board applied to have Alfred Cecil Wallace Oakey, medical superintendent of Greytown Hospital, exempted from military service. Mr Bell stated that Dr. Oakey had volunteered for overseas service but had not been able to secure release. “The matter is one for the Medical Association’s pool. The reservist will be able to serve when his turn comes” said Mr Stilwell in adjourning the appeal sine die. Robert Lambert appealed for postponement of service on behalf of Kenneth Vernon Lambert, precision grinder and metal sprayer, on the grounds of public interest and hardship. Mr S. V. Gooding appeared for the co-ap-pellant. Mr Gooding stated that the application had not been made on personal grounds. When the reservist’s services were recognised no obpection would be raised to his release to the Government, but his services were more valuable in his present position as he was a highly skilled metal sprayer and was working on Government contracts of a military nature.
The appeal was adjourned sine die. William Alleyne Laird Meredith appealed on behalf of Frederick Desmond Alleyne Meredith, shepherd, on the grounds of public interest and undue hardship. The appeal was adjourned sine die.
An appeal by Donald Garth McLachlan (Mr R. R. Burridge) for postponement of military service on behalf of Percy Donald McLachlan, farmer, was adjourned sine die. William Wong appealed on behalf of James Albert Long, fruiterer's assistant, on the grounds of public interest and undue hardship. The appeal was dismissed.
An appeal by Horace Edgar Ordish on behalf of Alfred James Ordish, farm manager, to have the reservist's liability for service postponed until Maj' 30 Avas granted. The following appeals for postponement of service, on the grounds of public interest and undue hardship, Avere adjourned sine die: Herbert Derry Bayliss on behalf of Stanley James Clifton, farm labourer. Estate Peter McLaren on behalf of lan Morrison McLaren, farm manager.
Sarah Emma Linihan (Mr R. McKenzie) on behalf of Samuel George Benge. David Buchart Carrick (Mr T. Cunningham) on behalf of David Kennedy Carrick, farmer. An appeal was also lodged by the reservist. Hugh George Williams on behalf of Gordon Alexander Fisher, shepherd. David Benge (Mr D. L. Taverner) on behalf of Charles Henry Bell, farm employee. An appeal by Walter Hibbard on behalf of Gilbert Noel Remnant on the grounds of public interest and undue hardship was withdrawn.
