FAMINE THREAT

IN KWANTUNG PROVINCE TEN MILLION CHINESE IN DANGER. JAPANESE BLOCKADE CUTS OFF RICE SUPPLIES. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 12.50 p.m.) HONG KONG, April 22. Ten million Chinese are threatened with famine in Eastern and Northern Kwantung Province as a result of the Japanese occupation and recently intensified naval blockade of the Kwantung coast. Rice, formerly abundantly supplied from Hunan province, French IndoChina and Burma, is at present retailing at the staggering price of 120 Chinese dollars per 1001 b. American Red Cross relief shipments of 500 tops of wheat per month are far from meeting requirements and increasing difficulty is encountered in reaching the affected areas.
