FORESTS ABLAZE

IN EASTERN AMERICAN STATES WIDE AREAS OF COUNTRY SWEPT. MANY DWELLINGS DESTROYED. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) NEW YORK, April 21. Forest fires in eight of the eastern States have continued to take toll of woodlands, marshes and farms that are parched by unseasonably warm and dry weather. Most of the fires are smaller than they were yesterday, when they swept over 100,000 acres and destroyed many dwellings and caused several million dollars of damage.

Stubborn blazes continue to challenge the fire-fighters in New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts and Vermont. New Jersey is the hardest hit, particularly in the vicinity of Lakewood, where 50 dwellings are completely destroyed and numerous others are damaged.
