FIRES IN PLYMOUTH

STARTED BY ENEMY BOMBERS RAID OF BRIEF DURATION. LIMITED ACTIVITY ELSEWHERE IN BRITAIN. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, April 22. Plymouth was the main target of enemy raids over Britain last night. The raid was short, but several fires, some of them large, were started. The situation was under control before daylight. . An Air Ministry communique issued this morning states that though the attack was severe the damage and casualties were not as heavy as in previous raids on Plymouth. There was a short alert in London during the night but no bombs were dropped. In raids over East Anglia little damage was done and few people were killed.

MUCH DAMAGE DONE EAST COAST TOWN ALSO RAIDED. CHURCH AND DWELLINGS' WRECKED. (Received This Day, 10.40 a.m.) LONDON, April 22. Anti-aircraft barrage, roaring fires, countless flares and incendiary bombs dropped by raiders over Plymouth last night, provided a vivid spectacle, visible for forty miles. It is feared that the damage is considerable. Relays of bombers dropped incendiary and high-explosive bombs on an east coast town last night, and seriously damaged a centuries old church. Voluntary fire-watchers saved much property, but a number of houses were wrecked by bombs.
