WOOL APPRAISEMENT
FIFTH AND LAST DUNEDIN OFFERING. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) DUNEDIN. April 21. The fifth and last Dunedin wool appraisement for the 1940-41 season, which will end on June 30, was concluded today. Catalogues comprising 5373 bales were submitted to the official appraisers and this brought the total offering for the season to 79,454 bales, compared with last season’s total of 81,204. Individual totals of this season’s appraisements were 3819 (compared with 3248 last season); 21,757 (21,250); 28,284 (21,129); 20,221 (19,272); and 5373 (16,305). Though these figures show a slight decrease from last season’s total, they are considered to be very satisfactory. The wool for this last appraisement represented clips from Central Otago and coastal districts, in addition to straggler wool, oddments, skirtings and a percentage of crutchings. Prices realised were in line with schedule rates fixed at the beginning of the season and late-shorn wools, being heavier in grease, were priced according to yield and quality. The official report of the Dunedin Stock Agents and Woolbrokers’ Association states that in these instances prices a pound naturally were not as high as earlier realisations, but that growers obtained the benefit of the extra weight. The offering also included the usual proportion of seedy wools and these, both with fleece and pieces, the report continues, were priced below the equivalent grades of free wools.
All catalogues contained a percentage of lambs’ wool, which sold particularly well where staples showed good length and it was free from seed.
