WAIRARAPA P. & A. SOCIETY ANNUAL REPORT. SUCCESSFUL YEAR RECORDED. (“Times-Age"' Special.) “I am glad to be able to report a very satisfactory year for the society." states Mi- J. A. McLeod, president of the Wairarapa and East Coast P. and A. Society,- in his annual report. "Our Empire being at war, and in view of the war’s effect on the economy of New Zealand and consequent labour difficulties and various restrictions, your committee seriously considered the advisability of not carrying on the show, but decided that the correct policy was to carry on. Their decision was amply justified as evidenced by the support extended by members, exhibitors and the public of Wairarapa. "The show was held at the usual time and proved very successful, entries in the live stock sections being of the usual high standard and very little short of the average number. The other sections were also well supported; special efforts being made by commercial firms and all other exhibitors to overcome difficulties. We were favoured by ideal weather on both days and the attendance was well up to the average for several years past. • The committee appreciates very, much the support given by all sections. This gives them encouragement in their efforts and enables them to adopt a progressive policy. "Finance: In view of the probable effects of the war on the finances of the society, the committee thoroughly scrutinised the financial position and severely curtailed expenditure whereever possible, particularly in the prize list. Exhibitors whole-heartedly supported this action and I wish to thank them for so willingly accepting the position. As a result of the economies effected, backed up by support in the way of donations (for which we are as ever grateful) and by other contributing factors, we were able to show a profit for the year of £595 19s 3d. which far exceeded our most optomistic expectations. The profit is made up as follows:—General Show Account, debt reduction, £120; General Show Account, balance profit, £4lO 0s 4d; Reserve Account (P. 0.5.8. interest), £l3 15s 3d; office building account, £52 3s 8d; total £595 19s 3d. “Membership: The membership stands at 758, a reduction of 12 on the previous year. Eighteen members are serving with the overseas forces and are being kept good on the books. The members serving are as under: E. R. W. Bidwill, lan A. M. Bond. L. Chapman, -I. T. Cooper, K. Donald, Warwick Hall, Alan Harp, D. G. P. Johnston, H. H. 'Kelly, J. L. Milne, A. R. McLeod. Colin McLeod, Alex M. McPhee, N. Nix, R. O'Keefe, A. E. O’Leary, Duncan Smith, H. C. Webster. “Maintenance: The-policy of painting fresh buildings each year has been continued, additional buildings having been painted during the year, to the improvement of the appearance of the grounds. Buildings and plant have been maintained in good repair. “Challenge Cups: Cups were won outright at the show as follow:—Wellington District Cocker Spaniel Club (best junior Cocker Spaniel), Mrs J. Watt; Mr J. Jameson re-presented the Rayner Brothers Cup won outright by him at the 1939 Show. “Secretary: The secretary (Mr L. H. Smart) has consented to continue in office for a further 12 months in’view of the present war conditions. Committee: Messrs Colin McLeod and Keith Donald, members of the committee are on active service and dining their absence Messi's Ivan McLeod and Bruce Donald have been co-opted tn tlie committee.
"Thanks: All the officers, committeemen and stewards have given wholehearted support during the year, and I extend to them and also to all exhibitors. judges and the public of Wairarapa my thanks. The Press have, as in the past, given the society wide publicity and their assistance is very much appreci a ted.” ______
