POLISH AIRMEN
CELEBRATION OF HITLER’S BIRTHDAY.
DESTRUCTION OF ENEMY PLANES.
(British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 1.20 p.m.) RUGBY, April 20.
Two Polish airmen, holders of the Virtu Militari, celebrated Hitler’s birthday on Sunday in a manner their oppressed countrymen will appreciate. One, an officer in the famous Polish Spitfire squadron, which made ah offensive sweep over occupied France, shot down a Messerschmitt 109. He said: “I dived on him and gave him one short and one long burst. I saw him turn over and go down in flames, but whether he fell into the sea or on land I could not tell. Anyway I celebrated Hitler’s birthday.”
Another Polish . officer sent a Messerschmitt 109 diving, apparently out of control. A sergeant-pilot of the same squadron saw a Junkers 89 heading for England. He at once dived on him and chased him all the way back, damaging him severely.
