MAJOR LANDING

MADE BY JAPANESE ON THE CHINESE COAST. ATTEMPT TO CUT SUPPLY ROUTES. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) SHANGHAI, April 19. The Japanese army and navy jointly announced that major landing operations on the Chekiang coast this morning have resulted in the occupation of Chinghai. Shihpu, Hairnen and Wenchow.

Informed Japanese circles expressed the opinion that this was the beginning of one of the most important Japanese operations since the capture of Hankow, with the purpose of closing off Chungking supply routes. Much material, they said, was being smuggled through the Chekiang coastal area.
