EKETAHUNA
A CLEAN TOWN PRAISE FROM VISITORS. (“Times-Age” Special.) A number-of visitors to Eketahuna during the Easter period expressed appreciation of the clean appearance of the town, the pretty surroundings and the many interesting motor drives in the district. They also were surprised at the up-to-date character of the shops, where the highest class goods were obtainable at prices comparing favourably with those of bigger centres nearer the ports. A solid town financially, Eketahuna must continue to grow and to thrive. Commercially serving a wide area Eketahuna can proudly point to the fact that it is carrying out those duties associated therewith in a manner which reflects the greatest credit upon its citizens. The Pig Industry. The pig industry continues to flourish in the district and there is a steady increase in the number of pigs. Mr R. Farrow in particular has made preparations to extend his activities in the industry and Mr A. Golder, of Nireaha, and Mr Bird, of Mauriceville, are increasing the number of their purebred animals, recognising the great future which there is for the industry. Pig raising was at one time looked upon by many farmers in this district, as something which could only lead to loss, and those who entered into it were considered very foolish. Time has proved that breeding pigs is the most profitable of any farming operation, and consequently more farmers are engaging in the industry. The Home Guard. Considerable enthusiasm is continuing to be shown in connection with the Home Guard, and the improvement in the drill of the men is most marked. More men are coming into the units and the district should ultimately have one of the strongest Home Guards in the province. Sheep Prices Decline. At the weekly stock sale at Eketahuna yesterday the quality of the sheep yarded was not up to the standard of recent sales, and consequently prices slumped somewhat. Though there were frequent passings most of the stock was eventually sold. Sequel to Motor Accident. Before Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., in the Pahiatua Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, Vincent Frederick . Norman Capes, carrier of Eketahuna, was charged with having negligently driven a motor lorry on the main highway on April 4, and having failed to stop and ascertain whether any person had received injury. The proceedings were the outcome of a collision which occurred when defendant’s lorry allegedly ran into a small car driven by Mr H. Hirst, of Konini. The defendant subsequently appeared before a J.P. at Eketahuna and was remanded to appear at Pahiatua.
lifter lengthy evidence had been taken the defendant was committed to the Supreme Court at Palmerston North for trial. Thief Sent to Gaol. At the Pahiatua S.M. Court on Wednesday, James Herbert Marshall was charged with the theft of a double blanket valued at £1 17s 6d, the property of H. E. Jaspers, of Newman, a motor-car jack and other goods to the value of £1 18s 6d, the property of Elizabeth Ann Thompson, of Hamua, and a battery and spanner the property of Herbert Motors, Eketahuna. On the first charge he was sentenced to three months' imprisonment, and on the others he was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within 12 months. Pleas of guilty were entered on behalf of accused. Personal Items. Mrs W. Anderson is visiting Rotorua. Mr H. Eagle, Newman, is aj inmate of the Pahiatua Hospital
