THE DAPHNE
A FRAGRANT SHOW. One of the earliest of dwarf shrubs to flower is the fragrant daphne. Unfortunately, it is not one of the easiest. There is a mistaken notion that it will only thrive in peaty soils. Actually it dislikes lime and objects strongly to a soil which dries out rapidly in summer and is equally intolerant of chilly stagnancy in winter. These are conditions which are likely to occur on heavy clay soils, and, at least as far as summer dryness is concerned, on light sandy ones, but are not so prevalent on soils well supplied with humus, hence the popular belief about peat. When preparing sites for daphne, it is advisable to dig in'' plenty of humus-forming material, be it leafmould. peat, or anything else and if the soil is heavy, plenty of sand as well. .
