The official opening of the Carterton Golf Club’s season will take place on Saturday, at 1.15 p.m. All members and intending members are invited to attend. Tomorrow evening a dance will be j held in the Belvedere schoolroom j when good music and supper will be provided. a Shooting Season. c Many sportsmen are preparing their

maimai’s at the ' Wairarapa Lake in view of the opening of the duck and swan shooting season early next month. Ducks and swans are reported to be very plentiful this season and good bags are expected. Recruits Leave Carterton. A large number of people assembled yesterday afternoon at the Carterton Railway Station and gave the recruits going into camp at Trentham a rousing send-off. Proceedings were enlivened by Pipe Major Johns playing his bagpipes. As the train moved out from the station the men were cheered. Fire in Outhouse. About 11 o’clock yesterday morning an alarm was sounded on the fire siren and the brigade proceeded to a fire in . an outhouse on the property of Mrs M. Johnston, Pembroke Street. It was soon extinguished. Personal Items. The funeral of the. late Mr John Standen took place yesterday afternoon and was well attended. A short service was conducted by the Rev. W. F. Stent at the late residence of deceased. Mr Stent afterwards conducted the service at the graveside. The pall bearers were Messrs W. C. Deller. L. H. Smart, R. Bassett, L. J. Fairbrother, R. Whitburn and P. Hodder. Among others wreaths were forwarded by the Wairarapa P. and A. Society, of which deceased had been a member for 48 years and a life member the Carterton branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers’ Union, and the Wairarapa Provincial Council of the Farmers’ Union.

The death took place at the Greytown Hospital yesterday of Miss Alice Ackerman, at the age of 67 years. She was a

daughter of the late Mr and Mrs H. Ackerman, one time residents of the Carterton district. She received her schooling, with her brothers and sisters, at the Clareville School. The funeral will take place at Clareville. Home Guard. A training class for officers and n.c.o’s will be held in the King's Theatre tonight.
