CARTERTON
WOMEN’S INSTITUTE monthly meeting of members. (“Times-Age” Special.) At the monthly meeting of the Carterton Women's Institute, Mrs Peters presided over a fair attendance of members. Votes of condolence were passed to Mrs A. Knutson and to Mrs Lamb, of Martinborough, in their recent 'bereavements. Ten members volunteered to sell poppies on behalf of the Carterton branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association.
Invitations were accepted for four members to attend the birthday parties of the Parkvale Women's Institute and the Carterton League of Mothers. Two resignations were accepted with , _ regret. It was announced that the following remits will be discussed at the annual conference of the Wairarapa Federation to be held at Masterton:—From the Opaki Women's Institute: “That this Federation make a strong recommendation to the Dominion Executive to urge the Government to appoint women to hear cases of offences against women and children.” From Miss O. Wolters (executive member): “That we make a strong recommendation to the Dominion Executive, to urge the Government through the Health Department to observe a stricter supervision over second-hand bedding offered for sale at auction sales or sold through the medium of auction marts.” From the Upper Plain Women’s Institute: “That the Federation be asked to run the report competition on the same lines as the potato competition, that is, most points for Institutes with a membership of under 30, and also for over 30.” Mrs F. Peters and Mrs Hedley were appointed voting and reporting delegates, respectively, to the conference. The treasurer reported a small credit balance.
Miss V. Sorenson delighted those present with two well rendered vocal numbers and was presented with a shoulder spray, as also was Miss V. Irwin, who played her accompaniments.. The president announced that the competitions for next month would be: Apple tart on saucer, and the best bloom (not a shrub).
A bring and buy stall will be held at the May meeting. There will be a photograph competition at the same meeting.
Mrs H. J. Brown’s offer of a side of bacon to be sold on behalf of the Institute’s funds was accepted with thanks.
A cash donation from Mrs H. Knutson to be given to the member securing the most points during the year was much appreciated, and shfe was accorded a vote of thanks. In a competition, guessing the names of Carterton residents, Mesdames Grimmer and Bee-re tied with 24 each, and in the draw for the prize Mrs Grimmer was successful. Personal Items. Mr and Mrs A. Ingley left Carterton yesterday on a tcur of the North Island. At a gathering of the local staff of the W.F.C.A., Mr J. Harp June., who left for camp today, was presented with a money belt and. hold-all. Bowling. At the Manawatu tourney, Mr G. W. Hart’s Carterton rink qualified for post section play with six wins out of nine games played. Playing in the Wellington tourney. R. Thompson’s rink scored 4 wins.
